Made in Romford

1) the first modern chimney (designed by our Lord and Master, Count Rumford, recognised by Henry David Thoreau as a necessity for civilised life). Prior to him, chimneys either filled the room with smoke, or sent most of the heat outside.
Romans had chimneys, but they were used when it didn't matter that the heat went outside, or it was even an advantage - i.e., in bakeries, which tended to get too hot for comfort;
2) Fat Frank; 3) David Martin; 4) me (well, the very edge, Harold Park).

Bought my first single in Downtown Records - down in the tube station at midnight by the jam. Got chased through the shopping centre after for looking the wrong way at one of the Romford skins. Sure they were lanky pricks but they had big boots. Worked in a few shops there on saturdays when i was in sixth form which i got through with a few swift ones in the Bitter End at lunch time. Romford looks a bit small/sad when i've been back but fun times

Have you been to Romford lately? That couldnt be further from the truth but I suppose it’s easier to blame youngsters.

Have fond memories of Romford, like many. It's only labelled a shithole these days because of the young scum the UK now breeds that frequent these towns. The actual place isn't a shithole at all.
The Birdcage was a particular favourite of mine.

Used to be a quality fishmongers in the quadrant arcade it was there ever since I can remember,used to have live eels in a big steel pot at the front of the shop, remember being facinated by the eels getting diced up quickly and still wriggling as a kid. No idea if it's still there as I havnt been that way for years but like to think still is.

Bookers bakers, were good but not an Inns, White Hart fish bar was good also, Al would always drop in some scraps for the kids.
Saved throwing them in the bin.

Can remember crusty rolls and bloomers from the bakers on White Hart Lane. They don't do crusty up North, it's all soft and pappy bread and rolls ☹️
My Nan & Grandad lived on Mawney Road, they stood on the footbridge over the Eastern Avenue in '78 to watch all the triumphant Ipswich fans heading home from Wembley.

Another early memory was of a Saturday morning would go to Inns the bakers on Collier Row Lane and get crusty white rolls and a bloomer , the bread was still hot and the crusty bits would cut the insides of your mouth. Proper butter of course.
Also can remember the junction of the 127 and Mawney Road when it was a roundabout, unfortunately.

Couple of people have mentioned the speedway, which ran on Thursday nights in 1969, 1970 and 1971. I worked on the track staff and loved it there, missed only 1 meeting in the 3 years (although "my" team was actually West Ham).

Used to spend entire Saturdays in Romford, get the 103 bus from Dagenham, into McDonald's which would be rammed as it was the only one around and then just get up to mischief for the rest of the day, nothing serious just kids being kids. Always popped in ted ditchburns sport's shop aswell to look at sport's equipment I couldn't afford!
